Airport security level never went down below orange since 9.11. Airport securities got tighter and cautious on international travelers. TSA double checked international travelers bags and had tigher security check. Well if it said so, are we safe now. Look at this, it shows that we are not safe clearly.

How do you tame a Tiger?

January 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, an organization in Sri Lanka, is fighting for their independence: they want their own pocket of Sri Lanka for themselves. One of the reasons why it has been such a difficult group to manage, is because they have both political and military sects of their organization–both of which they use to their desired effect. Though the Tigers were founded nearly a half century ago, Dilrook Kannangara an author for the LankaWeb News wrote an article on them just last week, describing their “[ability to] have mastered the art of modern day genocide just as they mastered modern day suicide bombings”. The reason why this article is of interest, is because not only does it address the issue of Tiger attacks, but rather it delves into why they are occurring, giving possible causes, such as “Sri Lankan Tamil community failed to contribute effectively to the global Tamil culture” or ” They catch the bombers young, some as young as ten years old and train them over the years”. These two descriptions of the Tigers explain why and how they are doing what they do. Though this article is an opinion piece, the author is searching for a fundamental causation, so that the fighting can finally cease.

Settling down, selecting a theme

January 29, 2008 · 1 Comment

Terrorism is quite difficult to define, which is why I am befuddled by the amount of organizations and governments that are labeled as terrorist groups. A universal theme of terrorism is that innocent civilians are attacked, not simply the government, like ETA (the Basque terrorist group) targets. Our goal is to look at how terrorism is bred in different areas of the world. What makes the Tamil Tigers different from the PKK? How is Hezbollah any different than the Islamic Jihad? What caused the fall of groups such as the IRA and RUF? What are the causes of terrorism? Simple rebellion, or fundamentally rooted motivation? Is Kenya under terrorist attack or just social crisis. By looking at countries such as Sri Lanka, Turkey, Lebanon, and Palestine, we will have a variety of terrorist methods to compare and evaluate. We will also be delving into how the host countries are combating these actions. Also the other side of this coin, we’ll be looking at other countries, and seeing what they have that does not enable terrorism to exist–if there is such a paradise.

Viva Espana

After returning from Spain not too long ago, I still am trying to remain aware of its current happenings. For a country with such a long history, it is not a united nation, which is why for so many years, its national anthem has been sin palabras (without words). Perhaps the Spaniards feel that music is moving enough, but the Olympic athletes are not sharing this same warmth as they merely hum to their country’s song during the opening celebrations. Here is the latest attempt at putting terms to the tone.
