Actually, while the law required Canadians to prove citizenship before being allowed entry into the US, customs officials rarely requested to see proof of citizenship prior to 9/11. For the most part, they’d just wave suspected Canadians on through.

You shouldn’t believe everything CNN says. For at the very least the past 20 years, Canadians entering the States by ground (car, train…) had to prove they were Canadian. While they didn’t need a passport or visa, they did need an offical document (driver’s license, birth certificate or medical card). It’s easier for Canadians to enter the States then most but that doesn’t mean they can just waltz in either. So yeah, still not fair to Mexicans though.
